Cabometyx (generic name: cabozantinib) is an oral targeted cancer therapy belonging to the class of medicines known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). It inhibits several receptor tyrosine kinases, including VEGFR, MET, and AXL, which are involved in tumour growth, angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), cancer cell survival, and metastasis.

Cabometyx is approved for the treatment of several cancers, including:

  • Advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) (kidney cancer)
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (liver cancer) in certain patients who have previously received sorafenib
  • Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) that has progressed after treatment with VEGFR-targeted therapy and is refractory or not eligible for radioactive iodine
  • In some regions, it is also used in combination with immunotherapy (such as nivolumab) as a first-line treatment for advanced renal cell carcinoma.

Cabometyx is taken orally once daily and should be taken on an empty stomach, avoiding food for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour after each dose. Common side effects include diarrhoea, fatigue, high blood pressure, decreased appetite, nausea, weight loss, hand-foot syndrome (palmar-plantar erythrodysaesthesia), and mouth sores. Serious adverse effects may include severe bleeding, gastrointestinal perforation, impaired wound healing, blood clots, liver problems, and jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis).

Patients taking Cabometyx require regular monitoring by their healthcare provider to assess treatment response and manage potential side effects.
