Xolair

Xolair

Xolair® (omalizumab) is a prescription biologic medication that helps treat certain allergic and inflammatory conditions by blocking immunoglobulin E (IgE), a key antibody involved in allergic reactions. It is administered as a subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection and is used for eligible patients with severe allergic asthma, chronic spontaneous urticaria (chronic hives), and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps when standard treatments do not provide adequate control.

Xolair® (omalizumab) is a monoclonal antibody (biologic therapy) designed to target and bind to immunoglobulin E (IgE), reducing the body's allergic response and helping prevent inflammation associated with certain chronic allergic diseases. By lowering free IgE levels, Xolair helps reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms and exacerbations in eligible patients.

Xolair is approved for use as an add-on treatment in:

  • Severe allergic asthma in adults and children (aged 6 years and older) whose symptoms remain uncontrolled despite standard asthma medications.
  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in patients aged 12 years and older who continue to experience chronic hives despite antihistamine treatment.
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) in adults whose symptoms are not adequately controlled with intranasal corticosteroids.

The medication is given as a subcutaneous injection, with the dose and treatment schedule determined by the patient's condition, body weight, and, for allergic asthma, IgE levels. Depending on the indication and patient suitability, injections may be administered by a healthcare professional or self-administered at home after appropriate training.

Common side effects include injection-site reactions, headache, joint pain, and upper respiratory tract infections. Although uncommon, Xolair carries a risk of serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), which may occur after the first dose or even after multiple doses. Patients should receive appropriate guidance on recognizing symptoms of anaphylaxis and seeking immediate medical attention if they occur. Xolair is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks or emergency allergic reactions
